My Thoughts...

Well I guess it just came to my mind that we are protectors to the earth. Just like the People in Avatar. Only the earth cannot protect it's self. Well with that in mind we must be the worst protectors ever. We as the human race have destroyed forests and made species go extinct. Some protectors we are. Why are we doing this to our planet, our home? Just cause someone said this is how it is we are going to live driving cars that use fuel that will kill us. Just because we are scared to state our opinions. All those big companies don't want to hear mother natures warriors. Truly those warriors should be every single human in the world. This is not some exclusive Hollywood club. This is open to everyone, all you have to do is say I want to make a change. I'm gonna start being a solider in Mother Natures army. It is not an army of destruction, it is an army of peace keepers and protectors. Who are we protecting you might ask. Well, I am protecting the Earth, my home.

My Thought...

Global Warming in my opinion is a very serious issues, one that cannot be over looked. Still, sometimes it's hard for me to do the small things I tell you guys to do. Like taking shorter showers, remember to turn the lights of when I leave the room and recycling. It's hard to change my ways, but I still keep trying. Sometimes I might mess up and throw paper in the garbage. Only cause it was more convenient, the garbage can was right beside me. In my opinion, it might be the convenience that is killing our planet. let look at a situation we run into a lot, but we might not recognize it. Let say your mother is cooking dinner a the family wants chicken. Unfortunately, there is no chicken is in house. Therefore, your mother gets into the car on a lovely summer evening to go down ten blocks to the grocery store. Well now you might be thinking why not just walk. The answer here is it was more convenient for her to drive. See, convenience is a killer. So I think my goal is to try and remember that even if things are convenient it's not always the best for our planet.

Ozone Depletion

Well seeing my title you might or might not know what the ozone is. The ozone is this invisible layer surround the earth, present in the stratosphere. This layer protects us from ultraviolet light that will damage our eyes.

Antarctica was the first place hit with this issues and was discovered in the 1980's. There was a ginormous hole right above Antarctica. Have you ever heard about the polar ice caps melting (I did a post about this on Jan. 14)? Well this is due to the depletion of the ozone layer. What causes this is a gas called CFC. This is produced by you car air conditioners and refrigerators. So instead of lowering your car window, you crank up the AC even though the air outside does a better job of cooling you down. Did you know that 1 CFC atom over 100,000 molecules in the ozone! So what's the harm you think, so what the ozone is getting destroyed I'll just get a better tan. Well for every 1% of ozone that is destroyed 2% more UV light is allowed to reach the earth's surface. This means more skin diseases, our ocean levels will rise and if we keep this up the earth might become uninhabitable. The ozone layer does a lot more than we give it credit for. What would we do without it? So now the question is, what are we gonna do about it? Some countries have come to the decision to ban CFC's. Some environmentalists think it's to late. My thinking is, if work hard we can definitely make a huge change. We may never be able to fix the damage we have already done, but we can change for the future. Unfortunately, even if we completely stop the usage of CFC, it will continue to linger in the stratosphere for another 100 year after. There is just to much CFC's in our environment already to get rid of. Then we think, well that's not a huge improvement, 100 years, that's just great. Then think what about the years after that those will be great. Think of our grandchildren don't we want a better future for them. Together we can make a change, try and implement some ideas of your own around your house to help with the reduction of CFCs.

Top 10 Things of What You Can do to Stop Climate Change

Reduce energy
useAdopt energy-saving habits. Make it a habit to turn off the lights as you leave a room. Also, replace standard light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. Turn off your computer and unplug electronics when they are not in use.

Change the way you think about transportation
Walk or bike whenever possible. Not only will you reduce your carbon footprint, but your overall level of health will improve and you will save money on parking and gasoline. Take public transit or carpool whenever possible. When purchasing a vehicle look for one with better mileage. Increase your fuel economy when driving by sticking to posted speed limits, and avoiding rapid acceleration and excessive braking. Plan and combine trips and errands. This will save you both time and money as well as reduce wear and tear on your vehicle. When travelling long distances, try to take a train or bus rather than flying or driving.

Insulate your home
Insulate yourself and your home. By properly insulating your home, you can ensure that heat stays in or out depending on the season. You can do this by purchasing windows and window coverings that will block out or keep in warmth, and by sealing any existing cracks. In winter, reduce your thermostat by two degrees Celcius to enjoy energy savings and a cozy sweater. In summer, use fans to circulate air, and set air conditioners to make your home a comfortable temperature. Lowering the temperature on your water heater to between 55 and 60 degrees Celcius and insulating your pipes also makes a difference. Federal government programs such as the ecoENERGY initiative provide incentives for energy-saving home upgrades.Information about the ecoENERGY initiative can be found at www.ecoaction.gc.ca/ecoenergy-ecoenergie/index-eng.cfm.

Make every drop count
Conserve water by fixing drips and leaks, and by installing low-flow shower heads and toilets. Challenge yourself to a speed shower. Turn off water while brushing teeth or shaving. Treating and transporting water requires energy, while water conservation results in reduced energy requirements and carbon emissions.

Cool wash and hang to dry
These are not just washing instructions on a label anymore, but an equation for energy savings. Wash clothing in cold water and hang clothing to dry outside, or indoors on a drying rack. Taking these steps will reduce your electricity bill and also prolong the life of clothing by reducing wear on the fabric caused by dryers.

High efficiency appliances
When replacing appliances, look for high efficiency units. Appliances with ENERGY STAR ratings, an international standard for energy-efficient consumer products, typically utilize a minimum of 20 percent less energy. This means savings for you and the environment.

Switch to "green power"
Research where your power is coming from - wind, water, coal or solar - and talk to your power provider to determine if a greater percentage could be coming from renewable resources. Encourage power providers to switch to green power and, if possible and/or economically viable, switch to a company offering power from renewable resources.

Recycle
Make recycling part of your daily routine. Recycle all packaging and consumer goods that you can. Aim to purchase items with minimal and recyclable packaging. For certain items with large amounts of packaging, ask retailers if they can recycle or re-use it. For electronics, facilities now exist that can dispose of electronics in an environmentally responsible manner. Encorp Pacific Return-It programs recycle "broken" end-of-life electronics. For location information, go to www.encorp.ca/electronics.

Repurpose
Rather than discarding or recycling clothing and household goods, give them a chance at a second life. Gently used clothing can be donated to charity or exchanged with friends and family. Old T-shirts can be repurposed into rags for cleaning. Household goods can be donated to charity or sold at a garage sale. Through repurposing, the amount of waste being sent to landfill sites is reduced, there is no need to use energy for recycling, and others can benefit from your used items.

Plants, our new best friend
When gardening, select plants that are well suited to your climate and require minimal watering and attention. Better yet, plant a tree, and it will provide shade and soak up carbon from the atmosphere.

Climate Change-Canada's Action Plan

We all know there is something different in the air. Is it that warm breeze on your face or the longer harder winter? You know bother of these this have a common aspect. can you guess what it is. Well if you said Global Warming or Climate Change your right (if you got climate change from the title you either cheated or you are very clever). So the unbearably warm air is killing you and the harsh winter is doing the same. What is being done about it? Cause you know you don't want to live in weather like this, now do you. So here is Canada's Acton Plan!

  • By 2020 they will reduce the intake and expulsion of greenhouse gases by 17% from 2005.

  • They have recently put into effect that 5% of gasoline must be a renewable resource

  • Canada has put away $400 million dollars aside to help other countries that what to make a difference in the issue of climate change. They will target 3 main areas adaptation, clean energy and, agriculture and forests

  • They are investing in cleaner energy(i.e. wind turbines and hydro power) and greener technologies(i.e. your device might have the energy star or have an energy saver setting)

  • Canada and the U.S. are currently researching green energy and a different greener way of life.

So there you have it Canada's Action Plan

Environment Canada-Alberta

Alberta happens to be the most greenhouse gas emitting province in Canada. Therefore we have to make sure we do the most we can to help over environment. So here are some plans Environment Canada has made to help Alberta. Here are some of the main ones.
  • Water of Life
  • Alberta and Climate Change
  • Monitoring System

Environment Canada is currently trying to work on a way to reduce CO2. Some places have all ready started to reduce emissions. By 2050 the plan should reduce carbon emissions by 50% from the"normal" standards. Isn't this awesome! Alberta has a plan lets hope they can follow through.

Cleaning Green

There are lots of products out there that are better for the environment and ourselves. Why you might ask do we need cleaning product better from the environment? Well usually we dump the cleaning water down the drain. The water goes into the drain and into the water we drink. It mixes with the water underground (which is our drinking water) and is absorbed by the earth. Tree aborb this water throgh their root. But because of the chemicals in the water the tree will die. A deer might come and eat the leafs of this tree. The chemical will also take the life of this deer. Then a hunter was walking through the forest and spot this animal. He will probably take this home to his family. Then this family will also die. So, now see this problem effects all everyone in the world. From the smallest creature to the largest. So next time you go to the store to by cleaning supplies check they are green. Let us stop this problem before it become too big to do something.

Saving the Trees

Trees are the ultimate gas exchanging device. They take in CO2 our waste. A turn it into oxygen which we all need to survive. Nature gave us this amazing gift. They give us clean air to breath, food, shelter, and just beauty. So why are we destroying this amazing gift? Only 1/3 of the rain forests in the world stands today. The forest cannot replenish these tree fast enough. That's why we have holiday's like arbor day. To raise awareness of the increasing problem. Some cities will have programs to go to a forest that has been clear cut and plant little trees that will help replenish the forest. Even if you don't have a program like this where you live. Grab some friends and get planting in and around your community. Help bring back those 2/3 of trees back.

Melting of the Polar Ice Caps

Hey, did anyone notice the rising of our oceans? Do you know why that is? Well it's because the polar ice caps are melting.Well this event is not just effecting our oceans it's effecting the polar bears. The polar bears have no were to walk, they are basically drowning. Polar bear are just one of the many species effected by the melting of the Polar Ice Caps. The oceans are rising at a frighteningly quickly rate. Soon enough Miami will be completely flooded. There goes my holidays your probably thinking after you read that last sentence. Well truth be told your not gonna live that long. This will have enormous effects on all of us. A major storage of fresh water to drink. Natural disasters, people losing their homes. This will happen if we don't change our ways now. Don't change next week or tomorrow, change NOW. Why is it so hard to prevent Global Warming???

Why is it so hard for us to prevent Global Warming?
Well our entire Alberta economy is based on oil. Half of the jobs in Alberta are because of the oil sands. It's so hard because well think about... What oil products do we use everyday??? How about what we heat our homes, and cars. What we put into our cars to make to them go. Even every electronic device we use requires energy. How you ask well here I'll tell you. In Alberta we plug our device in to charge, the electricity would come from a plant a plant that uses oil or gasoline or any other gas products. It unavoidable in our economy. But hopefully throughout time we as the next generation of leaders will make a difference.

Oil Sands

Oil sands is a major problem facing the world today. So here are the facts. Extracting oil sands uses way to much water to purify this sticky goop. Water that all life things on earth need to survive. The water we drink, the water that many don't have enough off in other countries. Oil sands are also having a trenomical effect on human health. More and more people every day are beginning diagnosed with diseases like lung cancer, and heart problems. Go green,go agaisnt the oil sands because future generations will have to pay the price. Go green maake the change today!

Global Warming

Global Warming although it doesn't seem like it, is happening right now. Every second a glacier is melting cause the ocean to rise. Then a polar bear loses it life just cause we don't want to walk a
block. We can all make a difference. Even the littlest things help like recycling, walking instead of driving, or even just remembering just to turn the lights off when we leave the room. This can all reduce Green Houses Gases that cause our atmosphere to deteriorate. Make a difference in the world rigth now.
